Biodiversity of the Thames KS5

Students carry out fieldwork to determine whether the management of the Tidal Thames is suitable for the maintenance of healthy biodiversity. This programme can be easily adapted to suit your modules and learning objectives.

Session 1

Fieldwork will include kick sampling and invasive species transects. A presentation will highlight the ecology of the river and look at sampling methods for monitoring.

Session 2

Students will analyse their kick samples by identifying invertebrates using microscopes and keys. On the pier students will collect water quality data (nitrate, phosphate, salinity, temperature and pH).

Full day programme – 4 hours plus half an hour for lunch. Half day’s available on request.
