Thames and Tudor life
This programme provides an opportunity to explore and understand the local environment at Southwark and what it would have looked like in the Tudor age, through a guided walking trail matched to foreshore exploration.
Session 1
Session 1 is divided into 2 parts.
Part 1 sees the pupils gain a basic understanding of the location, tides and uses of the Thames. A simple chronology will help pupils understand where the Tudors fit into history. Pupils will then take part in the Tudor Life walk, an interactive riverside trail to discover life in Tudor times through the clues in the local environment still visible today.
Part 2 sees pupils search the Thames foreshore for evidence of the Tudors by looking for the animal bones, oyster shells, clay pipes, pottery etc. left by London’s previous inhabitants.
Partner programme

Our partner programme offers the chance to extend your Tudor learning experience with an educational session run by the The Golden Hinde.
Step aboard a recreation of Sir Francis Drake’s legendary ship, the The Golden Hinde (located at the end of the Thames Explorer’s Thames and Tudor Life session), where costumed educators bring Tudor history to life. Through hands-on immersive activities, groups will discover the story of Sir Francis Drake’s circumnavigation of the world and experience life on board a 16th century galleon. This can to be booked separately with the The Golden Hinde to fit in either before or after your Thames Explorer session.
