It is important that we preserve the archaeology of the Thames foreshore for future generations. Thames Explorer Trust and the Port of London Authority (PLA) recommend that you do not take artefacts off the foreshore.
Please respect these wishes by abiding by the following rules:
- It is against the law to scrape, dig or use metal detectors on the foreshore without a permit, therefore please limit your searching to ‘eyes only’
- Do not take artefacts away from the foreshore. Take photographs of your finds instead.
- Bacteria may lay dormant on artefacts for many years and should be scrubbed and sterilised in a sterilising solution (Milton’s for example)
- If artefacts of historical importance are found, it is Thames Explorer Trust’s responsibility to take these to the Museum of London so that they can be examined by an archaeologist.
