GCSE Geography Fieldwork

GCSE students will develop their knowledge through essential fieldwork and data collection, gaining insights into the relationship between human and physical features of landscapes, processes and environmental challenges.

They will examine the hypothesis that bed load size changes along the river’s course and will also record data to establish the quality of the water.

Session one

In the classroom pupils will gain an overview of the River Thames. This case study develops knowledge of the history of the river through the industrial revolution through to the current day.  Both physical and human geography is covered including water cycle, river features, tides, flooding, our water supply and our water waste system. 

 

Session 2

This takes place on the pier and on the Thames foreshore. Pupils will be asked to complete a field sketch as well as doing a range of water testing including a settling test, turbidity, chemical testing (pH), temperature and velocity. Pupils will be asked to evaluate their findings. On the foreshore pupils will observe geographical phenomena and wildlife as an indicator of water quality. Students will then be introduced to measuring equipment and will measure bedload size along a number of points of the foreshore. Secondary data from sites up and downstream will be provided to see whether the hypothesis of changing bed load size is correct. Data will then be taken back to school for further interpretation.
