KS2 rivers and mapwork programme taught aboard a Thames riverboat

A memorable KS2 programme aboard the Golden Salamander riverboat, covering key National Curriculum objectives in both Geography and History. This four-hour session includes a boat trip along the Thames between Putney Bridge and Richmond Lock, providing a rare opportunity to observe the natural and man-made features of a river. The sessions also allows students to develop an understanding of the changing nature of settlements along this tidal stretch of the river by developing and applying mapwork skills using Ordinance Survey maps from different historic periods over the past 200 years.

The programme starts and ends at Thames Explorer Trust’s headquarters at Pier House in Chiswick. This programme is for two class groups of up to 30 students and usually runs between 10.30am and 2.30pm, exact content of the sessions can be adapted to meet the needs of your pupils.
